Asus AC1900 Review (RT-AC67P)

8.3 Total Score
EXCELLENT

The Asus AC1900 (RT-AC67P) Router is a great and affordable solution for giving your home or small office that Wi-Fi 5 boost and lots of features

PROS
  • Strong Wi-Fi 5 performance
  • Simple set-up
  • Good parental controls
  • Competitive price for a Wi-Fi router
CONS
  • Dual-band only
  • Can’t adjust orientation

The Asus AC1900 (RT-AC67P) Router is a great and affordable solution for giving your home or small office that Wi-Fi 5 boost. It is an upgraded version of the Asus RT-AC66U, now featuring much-improved hardware and software, alongside a sleeker design. Widely available online, the Asus AC1900 picks up where top-tier mesh systems like the Asus RT-AX92U (AX6100) would be overkill.

This dual-band router not only supports Wi-Fi 5 but does so on the 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz bands, with a top speed of 1900MBPs. It, thus, offers a fairly wide Wi-Fi 5 coverage at a very affordable price to folks looking to cover medium-sized homes and office spaces.

Of course, there are Wi-Fi 6 routers available for around the same price, including the Asus RT-AX58U, but if you’re looking at spending the bare minimum on a home-use router, the RT-AC67P is the wireless router to beat.

Again, Asus routers’ model numbers can be a little confusing, however, so it’s worth double-checking before purchase. There’s a very similar model called Asus RT-AC65, which is about the same price, but only runs at 1750Mbps. It’s still perfectly adequate for streaming video and web browsing on just a handful of connected devices.

However, if you have a home or office space with lots of computers and mobile devices all connected to the network simultaneously, it isn’t the most ideal. You’ll need stronger performance, and for that, the Asus RT-AC67P is a great choice. If you need something robust enough, the Asus RT-AX58U is another perfect choice that offers the best Wi-Fi 6 connectivity at a very reasonable price.

Asus AC1900 (RT-AC67P) design

Design and Features

The Asus AC1900 router shares the same sleeker, black design with angular lines and a glossy design as the RT-AC65. Its dimensions are those of Asus’ typical compact router from factor. It measures 8.66 x 6.3 x 3.43 inches and weighs 2.20 lbs. As expected of a budget router, the body is made of plastic but it doesn’t feel cheap at all.

On the front panel, there are LED indicators for power, WAN, LAN, Wi-Fi, and USB. On the back of the router, there are four Gigabit LAN ports, a WAN port, and a single USB 3.0 port for sharing USB storage devices on your home network. The router comes with 3 external antennae that can be adjusted to improve signal strength.

Just remember the Asus AC1900 doesn’t include a modem, so you’ll need to connect it to your existing broadband modem or router to connect to the Internet. There’s a dedicated Gigabit Ethernet port for that Internet connection, though.

Here are the main specs on the Asus AC1900 router:

  • Wireless connectivity: WiFi 4 (802.11n), WiFi 5 (802.11ac
  • Operating Frequency: 2.4 GHz / 5 GHz
  • Memory: 128MB
  • Storage: 128MB Flash
  • Beamforming: Implicit and Explicit for 2.4GHz and 5GHz
  • Ports: 1x Gigabit WAN, 4x Gigabit Ethernet, 1x USB 3.0
  • Dimensions (HxWxD): 8.66 x 6.3 x 3.43 inches

Setup

Getting started is pretty easy, and Asus manages to cater for both complete beginners and more advanced router users. The manual provided with the Asus RT-AC67P highlights everything and explains the two options that are available to get started.

For the experts who are familiar with networking technology, you can just use an Ethernet cable to connect the router directly to a Mac or PC and configure the network settings for yourself via a web browser interface.

For those just getting into networking, the Asus Router app for iOS and Android devices will come in handy instead. The app gives you a good start by giving you the option of creating a single network that combines the 2.4Hz and 5.0Hz bands, or settings up different networks that have different passwords.

The app also includes a handful of other useful features too, including the ability to create a temporary guest network and use QoS – the quality of service – to prioritize certain types of online services, such as streaming or gaming, that require top performance.

Asus offers useful extras over its router rivals, by providing good parental control. For instance, it allows you create schedules for Internet use, and filters for blocking adult content and other inappropriate material.

Asus AC1900 (RT-AC67P) side

Performance

And, of course, the Wi-Fi 5 technology of the Asus RT-AC67P delivers fantastic performance for your home-office Wi-Fi network. It uses an 802.11ac chipset, which is powered by 5G Wi-Fi and 256QAM technology, which allows the router to achieve higher wireless rates than N technology. Used over the 2.4GHz band, it can deliver up to 600 Mbps, while the 5.0GHz band can deliver up to 1300 Mbps.

The increased bandwidth offers you the increased capability you need to improve your Wi-Fi experience at home. With all of today’s laptops, desktops, and smartphones relying on Wi-Fi, the updated wireless fidelity is all you need to enhance your connectivity both now and down the road.

Multi-user multi-point (MU-MIMO) Wi-Fi technology allocates each compatible device its own dedicated full-speed Wi-Fi connection, allowing several devices to join the network concurrently without causing the network to slow down.

With the RT-AC67P, you can connect up to three MU-MIMO-compatible clients at the full speed of each device at the same time, as opposed to typical single-user MIMO, which requires individual devices to wait for consecutive transmissions. The router also features AiRadar beamforming technology that extends wireless stability and coverage, for up to 300 square feet.

Are there better alternatives?

In many respects, the TP-Link AC1750 (Archer A7) mirrors the Asus RT-AC67P. They’re similar in size, share the same AC1900 Wi-Fi performance potential, and comes with extra features like WPS, VPN, guest access, firewall protection, and DoS prevention of malicious hacks, but it comes without a USB port.

The TP-Link AX6600 (Archer GX90), on the other hand, offers the best connectivity for a large home with its tri-band connectivity 4804 Mbps (5GHz, HE160) + 1201 Mbps (5GHz) + 574 Mbps (2.4GHz), and offers useful extras like Game accelerator and runs on a powerful 1.5GHz Quad-Core CPU.

Asus RT-AC67P Review – Verdict

The Asus RT-AC67P is an excellent all-around performer that delivers good speeds in 802.11ac mode, and it easily beats most of its rivals. Even with newer Wi-Fi 6 routers in the market, stands out of the crowd with its affordable price, simple setup, and excellent interface that makes it easy enough for novices to use at home. And, its advanced features and enhanced controls make it attractive for techies and small businesses.

If you fancy a more powerful router that can be used for gaming and pretty much everything else at home and the office, the Asus AX6000 (RT-AX88U) is a good choice. However, if all you need is to connect your devices to the Internet at home or the office, the Asus AC1900 (RT-AC67P) offers tremendous bang for the buck.
